RENO, Nev. — The Northern Nevada Business Weekly, a sister publication to First Nation’s Focus, held its annual Readers Choice awards dinner Jan. 17 at the Atlantis Casino Spa Resort in Reno.

Sherry Rupert, executive director of the Nevada Indian Commission and chairwoman of the Nevada Indian Territory board of directors, was among 10 regional women and men who were nominated for the NNBW’s Most Influential: Thought Leader award.

After gold was found in California, silver was discovered in Virginia City, and the Comstock bonanza lured those seeking riches onto Washoe terrain. The settlers viewed the land as an object of financial opportunity. In a very short time, pine nuts, seeds, game and fish had been overused. The harmonious rhythm that the Washoe had maintained was broken.
